Jaguars defeat Hornets on Senior Day
By Murray Gleffe
ASHWAUBENON- Bailey Conradt, Jack Kiser, Kole Kolinski, Matt Luebke, and Sam Spika each took the court knowing that it would be their last conference match in a Jaguars uniform (May 15).
The Jaguars wouldn’t be denied as they rallied to defeat the Green Bay Preble Hornets (in boy’s tennis) by a final of 5-2 in the finale of 2018.
Kolinski and Colin Chapman (number one doubles) started the Jaguars out on the right foot by getting an easy two set victory.
Kolinski connected on 18 volley winners for the match.
At number four singles, Spika and his Hornets opponent played long points where nobody wanted to make the calculated mistake.
After cruising in the first set, Spika rallied from 4-2 down to take the match in two long hours.
Graham Kothbauer and Conradt met in a ‘battle of the minds’ affair at the second singles spot.
Conradt wanted to move Kothbauer around like chess pieces on a board, and Kothbauer wanted to get his moon-balls as high in the sky as he could.
The Jaguars senior was down in each set but ultimately prevailed to deliver the knockout punch (four total matches won) the Jaguars needed.
Also winning on the day were Sam Lokken and Grant Atwood, and Alex Steinfest who went the distance (three sets) in the final varsity match of the day.
To complete the quintet of seniors to win on the day, Kiser and Luebke won their exhibition match 8-6 to ensure a sweep for the graduating class!
The Jaguars improve to 8-5 overall and finish at 6-3 in the FRCC
